The Saint Monica and Saint Augustine Scholars are young women and young men in pursuit of excellence. They are middle school students from among Buffalo's toughest neighborhoods where the pressures of inner city living make academic success difficult. Many had failed and school and were ready to give up. Today, they are embracing the single gender, faith based, extended day and year program they need to prepare for success in high school and beyond. As a sign of their success, graduates are now attending many of the area's top public and private high schools. The programs are patterned after an original model for Catholic inner city education developed by the Nativity Mission Center in New York City in the early 1970's. The Nativity schools have been joined with the similar San Miguel schools sponsored by the Lasallian Christian Brothers in a network of more than 60 schools educating over 4,000 students nationwide. www.nativitymiguelschools.org This video was produced by the Canisius Video Institute, Buffalo, NY
