Bette was IN HER 60's here..and she always seems to flub SOME songs live..
she Used to (in earlier times) scream her songs, like Janis, and sound great. When she did that..her versions live were stunning--but it seems singing slow ballads makes her sound badly as if she can't hold the notes very long
Funny that..but on her album of Peggy Lee songs
sheS GREAT True fans of Betee love her singing, tho, I, myself have to admit this was painful listening. Sorry to Bette and her fans:)

Miltstar, I never would have known of Irene Dunne's version if not for you. Many thanks.....I never even knew that beautiful woman could sing!!
-
@VABkWrm Perhaps you should then listen to the album, then....
-
I love Peggy Lee but why does everyone refer to her version as the original....it was beautifully sung by so many others before her....Irene Dunne...Maxine Sullivan...Dakota Staton etc etc....
-
very nice...but check out Maxine Sulllivan doing this...its on youtube and there is nothing like it ! One of the most beautiful songs ever written. There is the original and beautiful version by Irene Dunne also on Youtube..,,,but it may be too
soprano-ish and old fashioned for some younger ears

@sisalrug a lovely response. thank you. I agree. it is her personal version. and so beautiful.

my Bette always smiles. so beautiful at every age. and this song. she once said it may be her favorite. me too.

hang it up Bette. This is better left to Peggy Lee. I have NO idea what she was thinking when she recorded this album. Bette had ZERO insight into Peggy Lee.

@dickanah I enjoy Bette Midler's music, but I am sorry to say I have to agree with you. This is not a particularly good performance. She does go terribly flat several times. LIke you, I prefer the original version by Peggy Lee. Perhaps Bette's recorded version is better?

She has a different style, that's all--- and approached the melody differently; using some of the harmony lines instead of the standard melody line. It has a nice sound. And I think her interpretive skills are phenomenal.
Bette and Peggy are both supergreat! Why bother to compare?--they are just different and the world is a much better place because of both of them...
