General Santos City
December 3, 2009

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo flew early this morning to General Santos City to visit the wake of the victims of Maguindanao massacre.

The President, who believes in the freedom of the press, expressed her sympathy to the families of the victims, while listening to their stories.

The victims were on board the six-vehicle convoy on their way to Comelec to file the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) of Mayor Esmael Mangundadatu, who will run as governor of the province, when the vicious attack came.

Among those who were killed in the massacre were 30 media men. In her statement, the President said, she attends the wake as her modest expression of the nations outrage and personal grief. According to her, the massacre was a black mark to our nation. She also hoped that the incident could rededicate our nation to the freedom of the press, freedom of political expression and freedom from political violence. She also extended the governments assistance to their needs.

After the visit, President Arroyo went to Koronadal City to lead the inauguration of the Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA) Business Center Phase 1.
