This is a documentary about the inspirational audio preservation work of Gordon Hempton. Videographer and Producer John Yeager follows Gordon as he gathers sounds from the Olympic National Park and Pacific Coast of Washington State. Edited by David Solheim of Digital Ave. Enjoy!

  • Dan Gibson, Walter Tilgner, Ruth Happel, R. Murray Schafer, Jean Roché, Martyn Stewart, Ben Burtt, Andy Wiskes, Randy Thom, Joe Herrington, Bernie Krause, & a whole host of others were recording long before Hempton ever held a microphone in his hand. Every one of these recordists most beginning at least a decade before Hempton were intimately familiar with complex stereo & mono field systems (including binaural) & had vast experience recording at least as far afield as this claimant.

  • I deeply respect your art of recording! The heart of this story is not a claim on the field of recording, but instead, meant to inspire people to pursue careers that reflect the beauty of our world. I am delighted that you are doing that very thing by capturing audio that our children and their children can benefit from for years to come! My best to you all!

  • Also, this is a an excellent quality video with great visuals and sound. Awesome! Thanks for posting! Ciao, Donna

  • Nice piece. I am inspired to embrace the audio side of A/V with greater creativity.

  • Nice clip. Not to get too technical but I think a more clear distinction needs to be made between what is "human made" sound and what is in fact mechanical noise. Jets, chainsaws and cars produce mechanical noise made by combustion engines which are of course operated by humans but not actually made by humans. I would say many human made sounds are in the same class of extinction as the silent places Gordon refers to, sounds connected to lost pre-industrial age traditions and cultural practices.

  • I enjoyed the show on NPR today. Great sounds, thank you.

    Which recorder are you using?

  • Excellent video and very inspiring. If the list of artists Biophony1 mentions have similar (binaural) material for > 30 minutes free of man made noise please share it. We can establish for ourselves rather than labeling Gordon as staking a claim, if I didn't know any better I would be tempted to label you as being jealous of his work. If yours is as good share it, let others make up their own mind.
