This is the first Navy in the World which gave New Worlds to the World. We Portuguese divided the World in two and established an empire in Africa-America-Asia.
@ANTIHYTLERS But I´m not here to put pseudo-nationalism in this(only a last comment to put this clear). I know something about this for interest for explorers and their lifes, whatever they were Portuguese, Spanish conquistadors and navigators(also very interesting), british, dutch, french, italians nordics before and after etc., celtic legends etc. I read all in the past and some articles and some historian works and books, even before this net window, but I need to learn more.
@ANTIHYTLERS Only a correction friend. Balboa baptized the Ocean, a sea for him, as "Mar del sur", a name that was more often used for 3 centuries, since him. He did not "discoved" it, he disc-reached for europens at its Eastern(America) side. The Ocean was already known to Europeans, by Polo and others, as you know, or even to the first Euro. Fleets to enter into its waters, since 1511 and 1512, to Spice Islands, others at the same time to China(1513). "Pacifico" was baptized by Magellan.
The Venetian Pigaffetta could credit for him and his companions who survived, the feat, but he atributted to Magalhães in his relate as the first to circum-navigate the world, and nobody before him.
A honest and romantic tribute, maybe. Well even if I credit the "circum-navigation" to Elcano and later other survivers taken to Lisbon in Portuguese India Armadas from the Trinidad etc., we know that were Magellan and some companions the first ones around the world, geographically.
Elcano, The Captain following the death of Carvalho(the captain afeter the death of Magellan), to avoid Portuguese India Armadas who were crossing the Indian Ocean, taked a meritory and southern route, for a first time to him and his crew, was a great feat, but his navigation was made in two oceans already explored before for 20 years by Dias, Gama, Cabral, Albuquerque, Mascarenhas (this one more south Indian Ocean) and other Expeditions and Armadas.
Magellan, had made 2/3 of the voyage as captain, and in the part "unknown" of it. Besides he has bean already in the famous battle of Diu, Conquest of Goa, Malaysia, Sumatra etc. before.
Abreu and Serrão (cousin of magellan) were with him in 1511 conuest of Malacca and Indonesian first explorations, at the Service of Afonso de Albuquerque, the two were even the first ones, by orders of Albuquerque, to command the first European Fleet to enter deep into the Pacific Ocean and Australasia, to the Spice Islands, the Molluccas, in 1511 and 1512.
