Despite efforts by the electoral commission to encourage voters with television adverts and other tactics, only 37% of those aged 18 to 24 turned out to vote for the last UK election. This number decreased from 39% in the 2001 election.

Having the right to vote is a democratic privilege. It is used to keep elected officials accountable and ensure that society is run fairly. If more young people choose not to vote than choose to vote, a problem with the legitimacy of democracy could ensue.

Legitimacy of the government and political system is necessary for issues to be resolved peacefully. If the political system is not being used to solve issues, people may use other undemocratic means to find a solution.

  • I think the more relevant question isn't whether students are apathetic, but whether voters are apathetic and those who refuse to participate are making a statement about it.
