Dave definitely plays cool chord progressions. I haven't seen any other guitarist combine folk, punk, and classic rock styles quite like Dave has. His guitar-playing makes the Alarm/U2 comparisons all the more frustrating. His playing was always so much more organic than the Edge's, and he played an acoustic guitar half the time.
