Lyrics

Well down in Mexicali
There's a crazy little place that I know
Where the drinks are hotter, than the chili sauce
And the boss is a cat named Joe.

He wears a red bandana
Plays a blues piana
In a honky tonk, down in Mexico
He wears a purple sash, and a black moustache
In a honky tonk, down in Mexico.

You know the first time that I saw him
He was sittin on a piano stool
I said "Tell me man, when does the fun begin?"
And he just winked his eye and said "Boy, be cool."

He wears a red bandana
Plays a blues piana
In a honky tonk, down in Mexico
He wears a purple sash, and a black moustache
In a honky tonk, down in Mexico.

All of a sudden in walks a chick
She started dancin' with a latin kick.
Around her waist she wore three fishnets
I didn't know just what to expect.
She started dancin' with a latin kick
She threw her arms all around my neck.
She started dancin' all around the floor
And then i saw a dance that I never saw before.

So if you're south of the border
I'm talking down in Mexico
If you wanna get hip
Man, don't hesitate
Just look up a cat named Joe.

He wears a red bandana
Plays a blues piana
In a honky tonk, down in Mexico
He wears a purple sash and a black moustache
In a honky tonk, down in Mexico.

The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group that had a string of hits in the late 1950s.
Beginning with "Searchin'" and "Young Blood", their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller.
Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo wop legacy through the 1960s.

Their first single, "Down in Mexico," was an R&B hit in 1956 and appears (in a re-recording from 1970, still with Gardner singing the lead) on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof.

Atco 6064 2/56 - Down In Mexico (CG 1/11/56) / Turtle Dovin´ (CG 1/11/56) went #8 on US R&B Charts.

Paolo Nutini regularly covers The Coasters "Down in Mexico" during live performances.

Death Proof is a 2007 American thriller film written, cinematographed, and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
The film centers on a psychopathic stunt man who stalks young women before murdering them in staged car accidents using his "death-proof" stunt car.
The film is a tribute to exploitation, muscle cars, and slasher film genres of the 1970s, and stars Kurt Russell, Zoë Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rose McGowan.

Death Proof was released theatrically in the United States as part of a double feature with Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror under the collective title Grindhouse in order to replicate the experience of viewing exploitation film double features in a "grindhouse" theater.
The films were released separately outside the United States and on DVD, with Death Proof going on sale in the United States on September 18, 2007.
