I don't understand what part the mould (spray on foam insulation) plays. Can someone explain? Is it necessary at all?

Pouring the concrete mix into the ball without using a mold will cause the ball to deform. It won't maintain a round shape. The concrete will set into the shape of a flat-sided egg or worse.

this is great! what weight was this particular KB? and what sized ball did you use?

@aermio This kettlebell with the added iron weights came out to 13 kilos. The ball was a Baden Rubber 8.5-Inch Playground Ball, about $8.
