Art photos made using the tarot cards from the boxed set released with Cher's 1991 U.S. edition of her "Love Hurts" cd, with her song, "Love and Understanding," from the same cd.
Love Hurts was released on June 11, 1991 and was the third and final album released by Cher for Geffen Records. The cd featured production by Bob Rock and saw her continue to collaborate with John Kalodner, Diane Warren and Desmond Child. The album was recorded in late 1990/early 1991, during the first year of Cher's relationship to Bon Jovi's guitarist Richie Sambora. She dedicated the album to him and "every man that ever made me shed a tear".
The album contained three covers: the worldwide hit "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" originally recorded by Merry Clayton in 1963, Kiss song "A World Without Heroes" recorded in 1980 and "Love Hurts" a remake of the 1975 version which Cher had previously recorded for her album Stars. This time the song was more pop/rock rather than a ballad. The originally version was released by Everly Brothers in 1960.
The European cover of the album was different from the American release, it featured Cher laying on a white background wearing a red wig. The European release also included the world wide hit, The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss) which reached #1 in over 10 countries and has sold over six million copies. In the United States, The Shoop Shoop Song was available only through the original soundtrack, Mermaids original soundtrack for the film of the same name.
Unlike Heart of Stone and Cher, Love Hurts received less attention in the North America, only achieving a gold certification in the U.S. while in European countries the album was certified multi-platinum. In the U.K, the album debuted at #1 and held this position for 6 consecutive weeks. The album became her second biggest selling album worldwide at the time (behind Heart of Stone) having sold over 10 million copies.
In 2001 it was re-released in a special collector's version and featured tarot cards with the lyrics of every song on the album.
Here are the lyrics ....
Here, here in this world
Where do we go
Where do we turn
When we need some love
It seems that love
Just cant be found
Where, where do we stand
When loves supply
Dont meet loves demand

We got enough stars
To light the sky at night
Enough sun to make
The whole world bright
We got more than enough
But theres one thing
Theres just not enough of...

Chorus:
Not enough love and understanding
We could use some love
To ease these troubled times
Not enough love and understanding
Why, oh why

Spend all of our time
Building buildings up to the sky
Reaching everywhere but where
We need to reach the most
Hearts never can win
Oh, in this race
This race that were in

Weve got enough cars
To drive around the world
Enough planes to take us anywhere
We got more than enough
But theres one thing
Theres just not enough of...

Chorus x 2

We need some understandin
We need a little more love
Some love and understandin
Enough stars to light the sky at night
Enough sun to make the whole world bright
Enough hearts to find some love inside
We got more than enough
But theres one thing
Theres just not enough of...

Chorus

  • this is my first time listening to this song and i adore i! hahaha its funny because the guys of my age (16) doesn't like his kind of music.. but i adore it!!

  • @nodaterequired and bbc radio 1 is still playing quality songs to this day!!

  • omg she should re- release this song now. WE NEED THIS MESSAGE and a great song like thing.

  • I love this song and thinks it one of Cher's best. It shows off her powerful voice very nicely imo.

  • Wow, Twenty years ago. I was in the UK on a working holiday when this song was released in 1991. I had a job as a Truck Driver and had the radio on all the time. BBC Radio One use to thrash this song about five times a day. They must have liked it as much as I did. It reminds me of some great memories.

  • The "DIVA" has pend quite a fitting song for the rough times we're in now, I just wish that more people would listen to the "MUSES" that sing these very positive, heartfelt and insightful messages i.e., Marvin Gay "What's Going On" The Temptations "Ball of Confusion" Kenny Loggins "Conviction of the HEART" And I think it's what's people are really longing for when you read comments about todays Music "SUCK" and the past is better, that which is missing now days is "THE MESSAGE IN THE MUSIC"
