  • By the way, you might not want to spend too much time with your hands right in front of the CRT. There is significant radiation coming from the CRT, at least the older ones.

  • @ianc2674 No, moving the radio a bit away from the TV can help if the radio is overwhelmed by the energy coming from the TV. The radio does not affect the TV. I've heard ham radio operators say exactly what causes these tones...can't quite recall. But what's cool is that you can actually play tunes by turning the radio's tuning knob. Again, this happens only when the TV is tuned to a TV broadcast. I don't know if modern CRT TVs do this trick.

    Hmm, I could see the tv acting as a transmitter (having all kinds of intestinal coils and electron guns firing inside) but how would the radio affect the tv? How does that work?

  • If you set the TV to receive a broadcasting channel, tuning the radio will produce musical tones. I did this as a kid when I would DX (tune for distant AM signals). The musical tones from the TV were interesting...you may to move the radio some distance from the TV to get the right signal level.
