That unfortunately so true. But there have been some bands still playing great metal, even without this distinct Hellenic touch. Bands like Order of The Ebon Hand, Naer Mataron, Mournblade, Bannerwar, Macarbe Omen etc. Even as late as 2010 you get diamonds appearing out of nowhere, such as Gospel of Grief's debut album.
