This dark little Cruncher variant is the brainchild of the members of Belgian fly fishing team -- G Loomis Team Belgium. The guys had a stormer of a first day to take top spot at the final of the 2010 Anglian Water Airflo International, held at Rutland Water a few months ago, and it was all thanks to this fly.
It's the kind of pattern that's drab and unobtrusive yet also holds a few key trigger points, which make it ideal for small-water rainbows as well as their reservoir cousins.
The hackle and tail give the fly movement, while the rib and the addition of UV give it that subtle bit of flash that can entice rainbows to investigate. Try fishing the fly on the dropper position with a lure of some description on the point, and use a slow retrieve for the best results during the winter months.
The varnished body means it won't fall to bits, either, after you've caught a few fish.
