Amira Hass has been a correspondent in the Occupied Territories for the Israeli daily Ha'aretz since the early 1990s. Hass describes her work as "writing about the Israeli occupation and Apartheid regime and about Israelis through the experiences of Palestinians."

Hass is the author of the widely acclaimed Drinking the Sea at Gaza and two books of collected articles.

The annual Eqbal Ahmad Lecture honors the teaching, scholarship, and activism of the late Eqbal Ahmad, who was a longtime Hampshire College professor. Professor Ahmad's faculty colleagues, former students, family, and friends from around the globe have joined together to make this lecture series a continuing celebration of his life and work. Previous Eqbal Ahmad Lecturers include Kofi Annan, Edward Said, Noam Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Seymour Hersh, and Tariq Ali.

  • What is so utterly tragic is that every act of cruelty that Israel has done in its morally repugnant occupation will be forgotten, and nothing will be redressed. No one will redress the wrongs that have been done to the Palestinians and all wrongs will be forgotten. Jews need to stand up like Amira Hass has and say," Not in our name!!!!"

  • ... a profoundly Israeli creation. To me, Gaza embodies the entire saga of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; it represents the central contradiction of the state of Israel – democracy for some, dispossession for others; it is our exposed nerve."

Salute Amira with deep Appreciation, Gratitude, and Love,

    Lisa

  • Thank YOU so much for this upload, dear Friend: In her evocative book Drinking the Sea at Gaza, Hass eloquently explains why she, an Israeli journalist, went to live in Yasser Arafat's tiny, garbage-strewn statelet. "In the end," she wrote, "my desire to live in Gaza stemmed neither from adventurism nor from insanity, but from that dread of being a bystander, from my need to understand, down to the last detail, a world that is, to the best of my political and historical comprehension ...
