PETER DE SAVARY'S NEW BOAT SAVVY GOES TO SEA - St. George's , Grenada -- (Tuesday, January 15th 2007) -- It took almost four hours for the classic yacht, Savvy, to move from shore to sea but no one seemed to mind. In fact, this is the way boats are traditionally launched in Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The elaborate and culturally rich ceremony which surrounded the launch of Mr. Peter de Savary's newest vessel, the Savvy, was enjoyed by hundreds of Grenadians and visitors. The ceremony which took place in Petit Martinique, featured traditional folk songs, string band music, ceremonial dancing and age old, handed down methods of boat launching.
The very special event was attended by Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, Minister for Carriacou and Petit Martinique Hon. Elvin Nimrod, Chairman of the de Savary Group Peter de Savary and local boat builder Mr. Baldwin de Roche, Hon. Elvin Nimrod praised Mr. de Savary for reenergizing the boat building industry in Petit Martiinique. "The launching of a boat in Carriacou and Petit Martinique is an extremely important, proud and special occasion. We Carriacouans and Petit Martiniquans regard our tradition of boat building as almost sacred. This is why the ceremony which surrounds the event is so important. We have preserved our traditions and I want to compliment Mr. de Savary for buying a traditional Petit Martinique boat. This is a clear demonstration of his respect and regard for our talent and culture," Minister Nimrod remarked.
"This yacht has been built just in time for the Port Louis Grenada Sailing Festival," said Mr. de Savary, as he took a break from helping to launch the yacht. "We intend to race the Savvy in Grenada and all of the regattas throughout the Caribbean. This boat will be a strong symbol of the ability and skill of Petit Martinique boat builders and will be used to promote the entire country," Mr. de Savary stated.
Speaking about the event, Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell expressed his views on how Mr. de Savary was helping the people of Grenada. The Prime Minister said, "Mr. de Savary's investments are impacting many different areas of our economy and are starting to improve the lives of our people. He is creating opportunities for a wide range of Grenadians. This is the kind of development and investment that our Government is proud of."
The Savvy is a 42 foot classic Petit Martinique boat. It will participate in all of the region's top regattas as a racing boat and as an attraction to boat enthusiasts. It will be skippered by a Grenadian captain and will have a full time Grenadian crew
