I filmed the visuals for this piece back in the 1980's. Originally planned as a version of the Langston Hughes short story "Thank you Ma'am", the first finished product was edited and stripped of its intended sound for submission to a special art event, the Parallaxis 2009 show in Portland Oregon. This program allowed visual artists a choice of new music pieces by emerging modern classical composers that would, in turn, become the basis for a new score to be added to the filmmaker's pictures. In the process, a new and collaborative work was created. The music I selected was written by Reza Vali and entitled "Folk Songs for String Quartet: Folk Dances". For the actual show, the music was performed live and in sync with the visuals by the internationally renown classical music ensemble, fEARnoMUSIC.
