In this 1955 recording, twenty-eight year old Charles Rosen (1927) performs Scarlatti's Sonata in G major, L.487, on the Siena Pianoforte. I created this music video from the LP "The Siena Pianoforte," issued in 1955 by Esoteric Records, serial number ESP 3000. This LP was the first of at least three renditions of this recording to be manufactured in the US.
The Siena Pianoforte was built in 1800 as a wedding present for a farming couple who lived in Siena. The story of the instrument and its travels is legendary; rather than try to explain it here, I encourage listeners to look it up on the internet, where there exists a plethora of information.
More Scarlatti:
Charles Rosen, 1955: Sonata in C major, L.202 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiYXnCWHhpA
From the reverse side of this LP:
Mozart / Charles Rosen, 1955: Sonata in B flat major, K.333 - Allegretto grazioso - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj7m7XiQO-Q
The sound quality of this instrument lends itself surprisingly well to the Scarlatti literature!
