Finding an alternative to heavily-polluting air transport is a dream for many researchers. Now, one magnificent man and his flying machine say they could have the answer -- a solar-powered balloon which uses wings to help it fly. It may sound -- and look -- unusual, but the French designer and his backers have high hopes for the Aerolabe.Duration: 01:51

  • It looks pretty silly but correct me if i am wrong, the truth is that the wing flap of birds and the tail swing of fish are more propulsion effective per unit of energy, than turbo engines. That is using the same amount of energy a wing flap produces more propulsion than a full rotation of a turbo engine using the same amount of energy. So, if that is true the problem is that our technology is not yet there to effectively simulate the mechanic properties of moving wings and tails.

  • Gaspar, I work with a company that is bringing out real airships with the latest technology and design advances. Every time we talk to a buyer or an investor we have to overcome scepticism created by cr*p like this. Please, please, please, if you really want to see these enviromentally friendly and useful vehicles come back in a strong way, stop putting out unworkable garbage like this. You are slowing us down. Sorry to be so harsh.

  • Gaspar needs to drop the wings and fins idea and use a ctenophore as a model.

Imagine a photovoltaic skin with a few hundred electric fans arrayed along the longitudinal ribs...

  • Why not make a dirigible with a blended wing body form that propels itself by rajiform flapping?

  • Silly. Why the flapping wings? I can't imagine it being a smooth flight unless there are many pairs. A few small turbine engines would make much more sense, even if they do use some carbon fuels, the buoyancy should still significantly reduce the quantity.

  • This reminds me of Howl's Moving Castle.

  • Ummm, what?

  • LOL

    What a load of BS!

  • Another utterly retarded "designer", getting attention for no good reason.
