  • he comes straight down so he is a stroker really. his rev rates are considered to be nearly a cranker, but he's relaxed and so balanced he's a stroker in my books. i use his methods all the time when i bowl.

  • believe me ,he´s not a stroker at all ! Walter Ray is the only textbook stroker on PBA telecasts! He doesn´t move his hand during the entire armswing and releases in a 10 o´clock position! He is pretty succesfull with it though!

  • yea...i just hate how bowlers get put into classifications...stroker, tweener, cranker...i like Power Player and Straight Player...most PBA guys would be Power Players with the exception of WRW, Norm, PB3, Jurek, Scroggy...they all can hook the ball but its not there bread and butter.

  • Ok see, I could totally agree with ALL OF YOU about the fact that release wise, and his form, technique, etc. is definitely not completely textbook cranker, but you guys are not considering the type of ball roll, ball reaction, and revs he creates. Being a cranker isn't just LOOKING LIKE one.

  • Cupping the wrist or keeping your fingers in the ball longer also creates hook by a yoyo affect. I think players have found pulling up takes away the spin and most importantly the yoyo, because you are applying less hand due to the stiffening of the wrist foint. It really shows how strong Mark Roth was.

  • @TheJoeBargo Speaking for myself, I can throw it straight up 2nd to hooking the whole lane to everything in between. I'm sure Wes can do the same...times 100. I think the argument centers around his timing and flow. I think most players have stroker timing these days. I think Ryan Shafer is probably a full on cranker given he looks like he pulls the ball up. Same goes for Robert Smith. The revs/hook come from speeding up the release by working the inside of the ball.

  • Enough with the arguements! All Pro bowlers(The good ones at least) are able to play all styles. It all depends on oil, ball type and wear of the lane.

  • He list his own style as Power Stroker...just look up his interview with USBC. You can argue all day long if you are too lazy to look it up, but it came from his own mouth....so have fun guessing all day.

  • Tweener

  • He's a tweener maybe? lol

  • @Muggel65 actually no, WRWJ is not considered a stroker due to his interrupted footwork, but other than that, i agree with you

  • not a fan of the big nasty and good he got some flak about not bowling in roth's pb tourney, but one thing he does have is a fantastic release. top 5 ever that i've ever seen.

  • @Deekus64

whoa pal, so because Wes is relaxed hes a stroker? that makes no sense.

Would Walter Ray be a cranker then?

  • let me add something for everyone to think about. when you want to figure out whether a bowler is a stroker, tweener, or cranker, the only thing you really want to know is the result of that bowler's release/style, which is BALL REACTION ON THE LANES. what difference would it really make if someone looks like a power stroker if they can still generate a higher rev rate. it would be pointless to think that someone is a stroker, but still generate 400-500 rpms, so look at what the ball reaction is
