Do people really need to hear Evanescence or something blaring over the top of this to feel the tragedy of the moment? If this isn't heartbreaking by sight alone, there's something badly wrong inside you.

  • Thanks for posting this. One request. Could you go into your youtube video settings and make this video viewable on a mobile device? I tried to show it to a friend on my iphone and it said "the content owner has not made this video available on mobile devices"

    .

  • @boysetsfire david purley fully deserved the award he received, although a question could be raised about why he was the only driver who stopped to help

  • @Clodknock stewards are probably the most underrated part of any Motorsport. even in f1 many of them are not paid a single penny for their work, though some of them have died doing their jobs. the stewards in this video were not equipped with any fireproof clothing or inflammatory masks, making it suicidal for them to even attempt to get close to roger Williamsons car.

  • thats moving!

  • it's not a coincidence that this man became a forma-1 pilot while the bastards are only stewards. that's how much they are worth.

  • I think I coudln't go on If I would have been in Purleys situatuion :-(

  • nearly 40 years on this is still very upsetting. Purley was the essense of what is meant by the word "hero." Tragic and shocking.

  • thank you counterx01...we don't need any music

  • Safety standards in F1 are taken so much for granted these days. Was David the only person wearing fire-proof clothing ? What is the difference in the fire extinguishers used in motor racing today ? The one that David tried to use was completely useless. David's George medal was fully deserved but was it an award for bravery or an apology for the lack of support ?
