@lygophile apparently anything a dogs head can get through, its body can also get through. There ribs are very flexible, I'd be worried about him getting stuck half way.
You do realise crate training is helpful in the house training process, makes travel convenient, and also keeps the dog out of dangerous situations (puppies put everything in their mouths, stairs, etc) when it can't be supervised, right?
