Of all the videos explaining how the clutch works, this is by far the best one. It's the only video that made me understand how the clutch works. Congratulations for this video!

Nothing, basically the friction plate is hooked to the transmission and surrounded by the flywheel and pressure plate, which are mounted to the motor. When the pressure plate retracts it removes the pressure that holds the friction material against the flywheel. Kind of like when the brake piston releases tension on pads, the pads may still rub against the rotors, but your car isn't slowing down as they simply float there. The wear against the plate is minimal or almost completely non existent.

Great job, the extra detail was very helpful. Am I correct to say that the force holding the clutch firm against the flywheel comes from the elasticity of the diaphragm spring? So, the throwout bearing is designed to pull evenly back on that diaphragm spring to relieve the pressure?
