Quick test of the Blackout Modular Preamp in my guitar. Here is the before:

My thoughts -- If you have a bass heavy guitar, I would avoid this. However, if you have a neutral to bright guitar, this can add some balls to it. It's not as "active" feeling as EMGs, but it's a little more direct than normal passives.

I used the following gear:

Caparison Dellinger 7 with a Duncan Custom 7 in the bridge and 59-7 in the neck
5150 III with a Mesa/Boogie 4x12 Traditional Cab. Channel 3 for rhythm, channel 2 for lead
Modded Tubescreamer
Apogee Duet
SM57
Logic 9 Pro with Logic's stereo delay on the leads
EZDrummer's Drumkit From Hell
Spectrasonics' Trilian

  • Does this solve the humming issue of passive pickups and treats like an EMG, which is absolutely noiseless when you dont touch the strings?

  • @baranismen I guess. If a guitar is properly grounded, it shouldn't make significant noise, regardless as to whether it's an active or passive circuit. If you're getting significant hum with your hands off the strings, look into re-evaluating your grounds. With the amount of gain I run, no matter what type of pickup, it's going to feedback when you let your hands off the guitar.

  • I am sorry to bother you again, does the pre amp work only one pickup, or multipul. I have hss charvel, there is no single coil blackouts, in that guitar I really want blackouts and my ec-1000 I am going to put john petrucci pickups

  • @crate718 Works on one or two pickup guitars.

  • I want to swap my emg pick ups for john petrucci pickups and thinking to get the the blackout pre amp but in time can the pre amp turn on and off, that is really imprortant to me???

  • @crate718 A Duncan tech said it was possible with a 4-pole switch, but I've never seen a wiring diagram for it.

  • I see a big difference but to reduce hum use copper shielding in the cavities of the guitar its a special tape and maybe some pickup covers made of metal to create the same magnetic waves, I like passives more but this is a great concept. don't get why they couldn't make this a tone pot where you pull up to activate it. But you want a really brutal sound out of pickups and can solder get 25k pots for passive pickups.

has an easy installation though, imagine this and an afterburner in one guitar

  • @crate718 I have a HSS in my Jackson soloist, and I have a bridge Blackout Metal, and I can buy 2 single coils Blackouts for it, but they don't come out in a lot of guitars, and they are not a Metal Blackout. Hopefully they will make Metal Blackout in a single coil version too.

  • @Code001 Its not much sound, and its properly grounded i'm pretty sure. What i'm talkin about is not feedback, its the "humming" sound anyway..
