What you described about seeing your mother cry, changing your view of her, happened to me as a child when my grandfather died (back in 1977).
At his funeral, all of a sudden my grandma started to cry, what I had never seen her do before, and I really felt how the pain overwhelmed her inner barriers, and although the two of them hadn't been very happy with each other, she obviously realized she had really lost him, and this was deep and puzzling and also a bit frightening for me (being 12).
The siren also makes me feel eerie, and I was not thought of during the war. My mother was born in 1944. Its just a scary sound. I love listening to your stories grandpa. You are a special man:))
