White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has stepped down from the Obama administration, with reports saying he's "widely expected" to run for mayor of Chicago, Illinois. President Obama announced that Emanuel was leaving the White House in a press conference on the morning of October 1, 2010. Emanuel, a Chicago native, choked up as he announced his departure. After thanking his staff, the often tough-talking Emanuel added, "I'm sure you've learned some words that you've never heard before."
President Obama called Emanuel's decision to step down "bittersweet." As he took to the podium to make the announcement, Obama called Emanuel's departure "one of the worst-kept secrets in Washington." Obama went on to praise Emanuel for his leadership, saying he had "exceeded all of my expectations" and adding that he "will be dearly missed."
During the press conference, Emanuel gave a "shout out" to Chicago, mentioning the (currently undefeated) Chicago Bears and vowing to "make our hometown even greater." Obama is also a Chicago native.
President Obama has appointed White House Deputy Chief of Staff Pete Rouse to serve as Chief of Staff beginning immediately, while a search is conducted for Emanuel's replacement. CNN says the of possible long-term Emanuel replacements includes White House aides Tom Donilon, Philip Schilirro and Ron Klain.
Once the announcement was made, media outlets began almost immediately to speculate on when Emanuel would announce his candidacy for mayor of Chicago. CNN quoted anonymous sources as saying that Emanuel probably would wait a few days before officially throwing his hat into the ring. FOX News quoted a White House source as saying that Emanuel was "expected to start a "listening tour" in Chicago's neighborhoods" on Monday, October 4, 2010.
Chicago's Democratic primary is set for February 22, 2011, but candidates must gather more than 12,000 signatures by November 22, 2010.
