Earl Vickers AES speech about valuable and informative background information about the sense and non-sense of loudness insanity on the 129th AES Convention, Nov. 2010.
Earl points out that there is no real reason for hyper-compression - also from the commercial view point. PLease watch and forward if you agree. Very informative video!

  • @ clybourne: maybe you haven´t grasped it? We do NOT speak about data compression. We speak about dynamic compression.

  • link to a few researches: dynamicrange.de/en/knowlegdebase

  • Sorry, this comment is not true. Estimated 90% or more of all commercially released CDs within the past 10 years have clipping when measured properly with True Peak. SPPM is an improper measurement method.

  • Hi Dennis, yes you are welcome to make a Portuguese translation and post the video on as many places as possible. The only prerequisite is that you add Earl´s link which can be found at the very end of the video. The one with sfxmachine. Please post it here so that we can add it on the Pleasurize Music site too. Thanks, Friedemann

  • I control my audio gain Producers should leave it alone .Iwant dyNAMics in my music,as most say KEEP it REAL.

  • The only bad thing about HDR is that everyone would probably turn it up to deafening volumes (instead of applying sane levels of equalization) just to hear the 'quiet' parts. (Which doesn't make sense with today's popular-in-the-USA music anyways...)

  • 2:45 lol. "Removes surprise from the Surprise Symphony and turns Stairway To Heaven into a sidewalk".

    That was epic.

  • @clybourne I'm not following. Who brought up the different sound file formats? All I hear in the video is persuasion on how hypercompression is bad.

  • Interesting video! "What's the Story (Morning Glory)" is a great album but it would sound even more amazing if the waveform didn't look like a brick-wall... same with "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not."

  • @1wibble2 I didn't even bring it to the table. Mr. canitasteyou321 was just confused about what I said so I had to explain something to him. I hope you at least understood what I said, because if you didn't, don't even bother responding.

  • @crocz This is a video highlighting the extreme damage to the quality of sound a limiter does, ie whats become known as 'The Loudness Wars'. This isn't about file compression or psychoacoustic algorithms used in such formats as mp3/aac etc. So all you're doing is making it more confusing for some people to understand the very specific point this video is trying to make. ie, please leave file compression discussions out of this.

  • you guys seriously don't know the difference between data compression and audio level compression? This video has NOTHING to do with lossy or lossless data compression. Spend some time understanding audio terminology before you call people names guys.
