Gore Vidal - acclaimed American author, historian, and political analyst - outlines the "national security state" of the US since the Kennedy administration. He explains how the US invents "enemies" (such as communism and terrorism) to feed the military-industrial complex and to keep the public in control.

  • PART II:

It is interesting to note the role of US media in perpetuating "the national security state". Serious debate and in-depth reporting on key issues are avoided lest the public catch on to the truth. Rather, emphasis is placed on superficial - but appealing - "appearances" to take advantage of American familiarity and fascination with advertisements. None other than President Kennedy said "It is the appearance of things that matters" (when enlisting communism as a "threat" to US).

  • PART I:

I agree with Vidal's observations: (a) US Presidents desire to carve a place in history as "war-time" Presidents, (b) the US invents enemies to feed its military-industrial complex and maintain its national security state, (c) "war on terror" should be seen as a substitute for earlier "war on communism", (d) 9/11 gave Bush administration a pretext to "overthrow the republic" (via Patriot Act), and (e) US addiction to cheap oil is the motivation for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
