Glad that you finally understand in this world there is always a good side as well as a bad side.
It is just like walking and reaching a fork road. Either take the left road or the right road. The decision lies on the person itself. Whether a person is good or bad, determines by himself / herself. It is a choice the person has to make.
We do not have to look into the negative side of life but knowing their existence can help us to be a better person. It is part of learning about life.

yes sometimes it is hard not to get negative as there is some abuse going on which offends my love and respect for Buddhism, but yes it is important to refuge in the goodness in people not in their badness

That is why we have to constant reminds ourselves about the path to positive energy and not to be affected by the negativity that minority people are having. Just like the saying goes - one bad apple does not mean every other apples are bad.
We should not judge a book by its cover. We should embrace the goodness in people and take refuge.
Be in the group of people who are positive and you will be embraced.
