  • I"m just curious what is the purpose of hobble breaking?

  • @mysecretscankill In this case, the horse was learning to let me pick up and clean out his rear hooves, but he was wanting to kick me because he didn't know that wasn't what I wanted. The hobble helped me clarify my request to him without offering him the opportunity to practice something I didn't want.

  • This was something we did a month ago, but I thought it might help someone who was having trouble handling their horses feet.

This horse was adopted today and is now on his way to Mississippi.

  • WTF!!!!!!!

  • @patriciabarlowirick o that makes sense thanks :)

  • we do somthing very similer but with out tying the rope around the neck. same idea works great. and like some one else mentioned it beats sticking your head down there to find out if he kicks.

  • A lot safer than sticking your head down there in the beginning for sure.

We had an old and lame former PMU broodmare for a few years and the scotch hobble was the only way to get her feet done. Really helped us and her to hold herself up for a quick trim.

    Good job Patricia.

A scotch hobble can be a very useful tool when done correctly.

    :~)

  • Thanks, very helpful video as I prepare to teach my horse a few things like hobbling.

  • Never used a scotch hobble, but I work the rope around the back side quite a bit while leading, high and low. Great refresher here on and old-school tactic.

  • Pat , when I first started breaking colts over 30 yrs ago this is how I was taught to start them. I had forgot the name of this hobble thanks for the reminder. Looks like your colt is coming around nicely. 5 stars
