The scanning electron microscope is used to image the surface of a conducting sample by scanning it with a high energy beam of electrons. Some SEMs have additional software enhancements than enable them to focus the beam on a photomask for E-beam lithography or are equipped for focused ion beam (FIB) milling. This video is part 1 of a 6-part series, and gives a tour of the device, and describes how to prepare a sample.

  • nice demo. Can I borrow it?

If so, how soon can I get it.

  • @a2zhandi

Feel free to link to it or embed it.

  • Okay this is a little off topic this is concerning Diffraction Patterns i need help on understanding the planes of atoms such as 001, 100 etc. i know there is an incident spot which to my understanding correspond as 000 now do i know which planes correspond to which mineral or element i know this sounds silly but i'm having a hard time with this in class any help is appreciated

  • @cire254 I suggest you watch the videos on TEM or search for information on Low Energy Electron Diffraction.

  • Do you ever use LaB6 (lanthanum hexaboride) filaments instead of tungsten. I read somewhere that LaB6 has some advantages over tungsten for certain applications.

  • @Apollomoon17 I haven’t used any thermionic SEMs before, but the only advantage I’m aware of is they’re less expensive than FESEM. If you know of some application where LaB6 is preferred to FE, I’d be interested in learning more about that.

  • @cmditr no man, you misunderstood. I mean the "microscope" NOT the vid. haha

  • That's so sexy.

  • Superb explanation. Thank you very much!
