The unpopular reality is this -- All of the Above. It's not a choice between "digital tools" and "direct human interaction" at all. To be successful in the Music Business (not necessarily as a "musician"), you truly need to master songwriting, instrumental chops and live performance in addition to the ridiculously numerous digital tools. Why? Well, the labels won't help you. It's DIY or fail.

I'm sure a few of these digital tools have some merit like Indaba Music and a few others. But I think the point is that there is a whole industry that deals not in music but in exploiting the dreams and aspirations of musicians by offering services that are virtually (pun intended) worthless to all but the techno business geeks who started them.
