Bvdub:

San Francisco-based producer Brock Van Wey disguised under the moniker Bvdub, crafted ambient dub music on a series of EPs including I Never Cried A Tear (2007), Requited Love (2007), A Moment's Peace (2008), Dreams Of Red Chambers (2008), No Turning Back (2008), Return To Tonglu (2008), as well as on the albums Strength In Solitude (2600 Records, 2007) and Monuments To Oblivion (2008).

Van Wey delved into beat-less ambient electronica on White Clouds Drift On and On (Echospace, 2009), the first album released under his own name. The lengthy electronic excursions don't do much else than repeat themselves with minimal variations. The gentle waves of Too Little Too Late are the obvious archetype. Later they yield the nostalgic and ominous White Clouds Drift On And On. The breathing I Knew Happiness Once, however, slowly evolves into a powerful vocal collage. A thick paste of voices is processed by Forever A Stranger (the rare cinematic piece) until it becomes a loud organ-like drone from which a majestic female chant emerges. Blurred voice fragments duet with an out of tune guitar in A Gentle Hand To Hold. The drawback of these suites is that, ultimately, they are just loops of unsophisticated muzak. The bonus CD contains a series of techno-dub "remixes" by Stephen Hitchell.

Air Texture

Ambient today isn't so much about psychedelics or chilling out as it is presenting the melodic or beatless fabric of electronic music culture. Stripped of prevalent rhythm, songs tend toward melodic composition and detail. These songs may become "compositional" as individuals express themselves with technology under focused or emotive ideals. The music becomes timeless (free of meter) when the music looses its structure while retaining its idea.

In the tradition of Excursions in Ambience, Instinct Ambient, and Pop Ambient, Air Texture looks to catalogue and promote the diverse world of ambient, experimental, and less beat oriented electronic music.

The Air Texture Volume Series asks two producers to curate a CD each of material for combined release. Volume I looked to bvdub (Brock Van Wey) and Andrew Thomas for guidance. Selections featured an in-depth list of emerging and established artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never, Ian Hawgood, Atlas Sound, Klimek, loscil, Biosphere, Markus Guentner, and Wolfgang Voigt.

Volume II will be selected by loscil and Rafael Anton Irisarri. Volume III by Deadbeat and DJ Olive.

Air Texture's mission is to present a diverse array of electronic music that is not dance floor oriented. Hopefully from this a beautiful display of narrative, formless - yet formed - musical ideas will be presented and absorbed by sympathetic ears worldwide.

One could argue Gustavo Santaolalla's rips himself off. Not necessarily my opinion, but just saying.

I dont care if Brocks sampled or not ---this song is a Masterpiece --why do people always have to criticize people who sample ?

Well spotted and agree, didn't suspect Brock of being such a heavy sampler

@vegafuse1 It's not "stolen". Have you ever heard of a concept called sampling? If you bothered to listen to the whole track, the composition changes drastically throughout. It's only about two minutes at the start the guitar solo is sampled.

Amazing tune, anther amazing video Hacker. Well done.

PS How good is that Air Texture compilation? ;)

The music theme is actually stolen from Gustavo Santaolalla's "Deportation/Iguazu", written for the "Babel" movie. Huh, Bvdub, I respected you a bit more...
