A Video of Tragedy in the Irish sea some clips are not authentic but where used to get the story told . The pictures of the passengers and crew are as I know correct . story and crew and passenger details check out http://talesofriverside.blogspot.com/2009/03/ellan-vannin.html

Lyrics - Snaefell Tynwald, Ben-my-Chree,
Fourteen ships have sailed the sea.
proudly bearing a Manx name,
But there's one will never again. Chorus:
Oh Ellen Vannen,
Of the Isle of Man Company,
Oh Ellen Vannen,
Lost in the Irish Sea.
2. At One a.m. in Ramsey Bay,
Captain Teare was heard to say,
Our contract says Deliver the mail.
In this rough weather we must not fail.
Chorus:

3. Ocean Liners sheltered from the storm,
Ellen Vannen on the waves was born.
Her holds were full and battened down,
As she sailed towards far Liverpool town.
Chorus:
4. With a crew of twenty-one Manxmen,
Her passengers Liverpool business men;
Farewell to Mona's Isle farewell,
This little ship was bound for hell.
Chorus:
5. Less than a mile from the Bar lightship,
By a mighty wave Ellen Vannen was hit.
She sank in the waters of Liverpool Bay,
And there she lies until this day.
Chorus:

6. You Manxmen now remember,
The third day of the month December,
Of a terrible storm in Nineteen Nine,
Ellen Vannen sailed for the very last time.
Chorus:

  • thayght i would let you now i did some researh the captain james tear had 18 years experiance no im going onto the ship which was originally a paddle steamer and was conversted to a twin screw steamer this work altered the design of the ship and would have weackened the mid section so much so that your taking wather thiin in calm waters it would be ok but all it would take is a wave to cut thru the mid section like philidelphia and it would sink

  • @hamster700 Thanks for that my friend , very interesting

  • Our Year 6 at School used to go to the IOM every year. Our year sung this song in an assembly upon our return along the song The Laxey Wheel keeps turning. . That was nearly 20 years ago but the song has always stuck with me 70 years and 1 day before I was born.

  • this song has that effect .

  • I am proud that I was allowed to be part of the planning for the memorial on the River Mersey. My special thanks go to Chief Minister Tony Brown, IOMSPCL Chairman Robert Quayle, Manx Heritage Administrator Charles Guard and Manx Radio for making the journey across from the IOM for the service. An extra special thanks to Hughie Jones for singing live at the memorial. Hughie needs to change the first word of the last verse ALL MANXMEN NOW REMEMBER, because Hughies song will live forever.

  • thankyou very much for your comment I feel I should have been at the memorial but work commitments prevailed . thankyou to you and all for remembering this event in our history .

  • Brilliantly clear recording.

Takes me back to the folk revival of the 1960s and early '70s.

  • A couple of months from now, it will be precisely 100 years to the day since the tragedy. I do hope that this anniversary is marked, somewhere. Perhaps we can persuade some radio stations to play Hughie's wonderful song.

  • I love this song!! :):) Great job with the pics aswell!

  • Très poétique. je me suis souvent souvenu de cette chanson car au cours de ma vie, en décembre 1990 pour être précis, j'ai vécu une maladie douloureuse et cette chanson m'a beaucoup aidée.

  • my dad used to play the spinners records when i was a kid and i still play them now 35yrs later. i will always remember this song because we used to go to the isle of man on our holidays.

  • @sweeperdw same here, we used to listen to them in the car an will always remind me of trips down to Norfolk with my mum, grandma and grandad, my mum did see them live in the 60s when she was a teenager, now no-one who looks at my ipod knows who they are, a sad loss for musical tradition

  • This song was sung to me by a teacher in my junior school, and it still gives me goosebumps to hear it. Thank you so much for bringing me back some amazing memorys

  • Doh I'm 26! Can't even remember my own age! Duh!

  • This song always gives me goosebumps. This was by far my fave spinners song as a kid and I thought I would never hear it again as my dad lost the LP with it on. Thanks for posting.

I am only 25 but a massive fan of the spinners as my dad is a really big fan of theirs and used to go to loads of their concerts. One of my earliest memories is of attending their Christmas reunion concert in 1980something (1986/7?) it was one of the most fun evenings I have ever had! :)

  • I LOVE THIS SONG! My music teacher made us sing this because we are Manx! :)
