Aaliyah recorded this song for the movie re-make of 'Sparkle' which she was set to star in as one of the main roles chosen by Whitney Houston who was producing the re-make. Sadly, Aaliyah's death occurred before she could begin the filming so the movie was shut down, a few years later it re-casted the role and went back into production but then the release of 'Dreamgirls' completely ended it. This video features a clip from the original 'Sparkle' with the character which Aaliyah would have played lip-synching to some of the lyrics. This is a beautiful vocal from Baby Girl. **UPDATE - The movie re-make is now back on as of 2011 with confirmation of Jordan Sparks now casted as well as Whitney Houston herself to appear as a character. I hope they include Aaliyah's version of "Giving Up" and finally put it to use, even if it was just played over the end rolling credits.

  • Oscar material for sure

  • This song sounds like it holds all of the "what ifs" that fans have to deal with forever, knowing that Aaliyah's gone. It's some sad shit :( I love this girl..

  • @gangstakendoll I read somewhere that Whitney wanted this movie to be in honor of Aaliyah. So hopefully that is still true now that they're both gone...

  • Sparkle is already a movie, the 2012 by Whitney Huston is a Remake of the movie, Sparkle

It would really be sad to not see the movie because someone other than Aaliyah is not starring in it. Yes she does a great job singing this song. But listen to the original artist Donny Hathaway sing this song with all the pain and affliction of someone who knows what this feels like! like you just don't want to live anymore! RIP Donnie and Aaliyah

  • @gangstakendoll not credit but "homage"

  • @lcarprin agreed..i wont be seeing it either..I can't help but to think that the everytime I look at Jordin Sparks I'm really suppose to be looking at Aaliyah..I can't do it (Jordin < Aaliyah)..I do hope they give credit to Aaliyah AND Whitney at the beginning or the end of the movie like they did for Aaliyah at the end of Queen of The Damned

  • Wow the timing is amazing two great voices together now singing together forever RIP Aliyah and Mrs Whitney Houston We Will Always Love You Both !!!!! Thank you your music lives on............
