A few years ago, saddened by a very small turn out at the New Westminster Remembrance Day ceremonies, I was inspired to write and direct a television commercial to increase awareness in Remembrance Day.
I asked my good friend Fred Harder to help me with the set up and lighting, Sam Jocelyn would lend a hand with make-up and Dave Whitmey was to play the part of the World War One Canadian soldier.
The beautiful handwritten letter shown being written in the spot was penned by Christine Palylyk and shot prior to shooting Dave's scenes.
I slipped the letter scented with vanilla into the inside pocket of Dave's uniform. On the morning of the shoot I asked him to check his pockets for some inspiration from home before we began. I believe it helped set the tone for the whole shoot.
After shooting Jean Paul Carthy edited the spot and Jon Morris came in to tighten up the score and shave a bunch of time to get the spot down to one minute. They both did a fantastic job.
Lastly, thanks to my father Rick Simpson the spot aired nationally last year for ten days leading up to Remembrance Day. He had the courage to walk the project down to the local Global Television station affiliate in Kelowna, where he insisted that the Programming Director watch the spot. The Programming Director watched the spot and immediately sent it to the Vancouver station, Vancouver then sent it to Toronto and from there it was aired across Canada.
If it wasn't for my Dad, this project would still be sitting, unwatched, on my bookshelf.

Thanks Everyone!!

Richard
