2004 Ford Freestar SEL

This has a 4.2L V6 making only 201 HP while its paired to a 4 Speed Auto.

I've driven Lots of these vans and the ride is not bad. But the Engines are so down in power. They are not fast vans but they have lots Torque, The most of any MiniVan out there believe it or not.

The interior wasnt so great with lots of hard & rough surfaces, many plastics trims, pieces, & components that are prone to break easily.

The biggest problem with these vans is the Torque Converter which had a high failing rate. Many continue driving the vans not knowing the Torque Converter is failing & as a result end up damaging the transmission or could simply be left stuck if it ever completely fails. Many failed before the 40K mile mark and others before reaching 100K. This 1 has made it 155K with the stock Converter but it definitely screamed screwed when I revved it.

This Torque Converter issues also Followed onto the Mercury Monterey which is essentially the same Van only with Mercury Badges on it.

  • my grandmas 2007 ford free puts out 256hp 0-60 in just under 6 sec brand new

  • @bowlbybowl2 Did you do mods because thats nowhere near the stock HP rating

  • My moms odyssey is dam fast lol. When your driving it you can't help but speed hahaha. We were once doing like 90 and I was like dad chill!

  • @hondaftw1234

We had one of these for like 4 months when living up north. After leaving the Carwash I jumped on the Highway & Home was the next exit 1.5 miles away. I had the thing at top speed at 102 or 104 MPH so It would dry up LMAO.. Was as fast as it could go cause it didnt want to go faster. It handled fine tho, but again the biggest issue in these were the Tranny's/Torque Converters, Interior quality, & the oldschool engines which were boat anchors despite the high torque

  • My dad says this van and its Mercury counterpart were bad vehicles to start off with.

  • The cup holder didn't break. They are designed to do that. So if it gets stepped on, it doesn't break, just collapses.

  • @austinman1995 Or more realistically, the 6 Speed auto used in the 2008+ Taurus & it's 3.5L DOHC V6 which has proven to be a very reliable combo for ford

  • @2004NissanSentra I'm sorry, but the only time Chrysler's minivans had an advantage over a GM was when Stow 'n Go was introduced. I miss my Pontiac to this day! Not a fan of Chryslers to this day actually.

  • @TJC450 both vans were terrible, interiors were garbage, reliability was garbage, they were death traps, they were ugly to look at, and even chrysler minivans had so many advantages over them tho they were terrible too. the quest and sienna were better but they still weren't so great only the odyssey was the most decent minivan during that time

  • Glad GM and Ford don't make minivans anymore.

  • @Intechdude300

Yea, the interior in the 1999-2004 is quite cheap. Oh well, we got lucky because the 2004 model year had no tranny/torque converter probs
