Walk with the Arts is an arts education project geared toward elementary school children, created by the Berea (Kentucky) Arts Council and Tater Knob Pottery.
Walk with the Arts showcases regional artists and craftsmen demonstrating their skills in the open air environment of Indian Fort Theater in Berea. During the premier 2008 event, over 1,300 students watched and interacted with 14 featured artists as they explained their techniques and showcased their art.
With over 100 volunteers to coordinate and guide classes through the demonstration areas, the Walk with the Arts is like a moving outdoor classroom. Guides meet classes as they unload from school busses in the Indian Fort Theater parking lot and are lead in organized progression through the demonstration areas where each artist spends about 15 minutes showing their craft and answering questions. Some demonstration areas allowed students to participate in the creative processes. Demonstrations ranged from blacksmith arts to woodworking to storytelling to weaving and more.
Plans are underway for the 2009 Walk with the Arts. For more information, visit the Berea Arts Council website at: http://www.bereaartscouncil.org
