True, I totally agree. However, it was necessary from the director's point of view because it reveals what Michael had become, a ruthless, cold-blooded killer who couldn't even forgive his brother. It shows how he detached from the love of his family to the love of the world of crime. Total irony from what his father attempted to save him from.

This was on AMC yesterday(for the 922nd time) and caught the end of Godfather 2, when it flashes back to the scene around the dinner table when Michael's talking about having his own plans for his future. Faded into a scene with DOn Vito on a train with baby Michael. So bittersweet. Awesome films.
