This was a fantastic sight and sound, as sixteen Spitfires flew in formation, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, at the Duxford Battle of Britain airshow, after the flypast the Spitfires broke off and the sky was filled with warbirds tail chasing.

  • why is it that on every spitfire vid some guy is like "don't forget about the hurricane". The fact is the spitfire was a better plane, and if all of the brits fighter planes were spitfire the battle of britain would have ended a lot sooner.

  • @Jonathanfroglegs11 That is a interesting question, could we have won the Battle of Britain faster if all the Hurricanes were Spitfires ?

  • Not withstanding the part the Spit played in freeing Europe let's not forget the part it's 'plainer' sister the Hurricane played. However the Spit became an icon, something for people to believe in and cherish, a symbol of beauty and freedom. It is even more iconic today, over 70 years later. And whilst we are grateful to RJ Mitchell for the original design, let's not forget that the team led by Joseph Smith actually developed it into the quite different aircraft we recognise and love today.

  • @greywolf1958 thats a very valid point.

  • God Bless RJ Mitchell---------

  • @baldandold - 12 cylinder porn?

  • Still, that's such a great sound. I remember, just, the 60th Anniversary. I think they had 22 Spitfires in the air for that one. The sound was incredible. And the balbos they did back then were stupendously good. Some of the aircraft they had then have now crashed (e.g. Mossie, P38 etc) so they're less exciting now.

My Dad remembers 100s of Lancs flying over Cuffley on their way to be scrapped in the 1950s. Now that must have been a sound and a half!

  • And ye didn't pay to go in!

  • @Lucius1811 Well that's a rare piece of logic if I ever heard it. If an aircraft can shoot down a fighter it can sure as hell shoot down a bomber. The Hurricanes shot down more aircraft than the spits but they were used against the bombers because they were eventually out teched by the Axis aircraft. They were not as fast as the spits but were a more stable gun platform. The faster Spits were put against the German fighters. Both aircraft played an integral role in the BOB.

  • @Jonathanfroglegs11 the battle of britain would have been lost if you brits had only spitfires because it wasnt designed to take down a bomber, that was the hurricanes job.

  • There's a whine in the engine sound at 0:26. Beautiful to me but must have scared the bejessus out of an Axis soldier.
