Gold decoration has been popular since Egyptian times. Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic workshops also used it frequently. Beginning in the Renaissance, gold decoration became an indispensable part of the Venetian style.

  • @tpstrat14 Gold leaf weighs almost nothing. It's only about 1000 molecules thick... millionths of an inch. Those scrapings were only worth a few cents, if that.

  • hold your horses. he just scraped like gold shavings away? did he keep them? i mean, i know it's not much, but maybe like $5 or $10 worth of scrapings???

  • I do gilding with calligraphy, and the best, least expensive supplier of gold and other metal leaf I know of is called Art Essentials in New York City. I bought 40 books of gold for about $750 four years ago.

  • That is fascinating. I wonder if gum arabic is/was also used for applying gold leaf on other surfaces like stucco ornamentation, picture frames, etc.
