June 18th, 2010 -- Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock defeated the Tulsa Talons tonight 63-42 for their eighth win of the season.
Some of the newest members of the Shock (8-2) had the biggest impact on the game, including LB Antwan Marsh. The versatile Marsh scored the first touchdown of the game, and the first of his AFL career, on a one-yard sweep into the endzone. Three quarters later, Marsh recorded his second interception of the season, helping Spokane pull away from the Talons.
The newest member of the wide receiving corps, WR Emery Sammons, recorded his first touchdown of the season on a 47-yard bomb from QB Kyle Rowley on the final play of the third quarter. Sammons' touchdown reception bailed out Spokane's offense that had lost yardage on the previous two plays.
With 307 passing yards, Rowley recorded his sixth 300-yard passing game of the season. Additionally, Rowley posted seven touchdown passes -- including five for Spokane's leading receiver, Raul Vijil. Vijil led the team with 11 receptions for 103 receiving yards.
Spokane's defense held Tulsa to its lowest point total of the season (42). Talons QB Justin Allgood was under relentless pressure all night from Spokane's defensive line. Coming into tonight's game, the Talons' offensive line had only given up two sacks in ten games. Tonight, Spokane's DL Ben McCombs and Jerry Turner each recorded a sack. Turner's sack also forced a fumble that was recovered by Shock DB William Mulder.
In addition to Marsh's interception, Allgood also threw one to DB Travis Williams on the final play of the first half. Williams leads the team with four interceptions this season.
Allgood finished the night with 341 passing yards and five touchdowns. Allgood's leading receiver was Donovan Morgan, who recorded nine receptions for 129 yards with three touchdowns.
In other AFL news, the league's number one team, the Jacksonville Sharks, lost to the Orlando Predators, 70-48. The second-rated Shock defeated Jacksonville earlier this season (67-57) and the Orlando Predators (53-52) last week.
Next week, Spokane travels to Milwaukee to face the Iron. Earlier this season, the Iron gave Spokane its first loss of the season at home and the Shock hope to return the favor in Milwaukee. Coverage of Saturday's game against the Iron can be heard on 700 ESPN The Ticket with Dennis Patchin and Keith Osso starting at 3:30 PM.
