In May of 1970, Mick Jagger produced an excellent superstar payback album for the master Mississippi/Chicago bluesman, Howlin' Wolf, The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions. The opening track, Rockin' Daddy (Released years earlier on Chess records with a jump swing feel), was re-tooled to fit one of his classic grooves, Killing Floor. This lesson is based on that track.
The London Sessions version of Rockin' Daddy features Wolf's longtime rhythm/lead guitarist, Hubert Sumlin with Eric Clapton. Hubert handles the riff, and Eric takes the lead. His chicken-pickin' intro lick alone is worth the price of admission. For a different slant on the Killing Floor groove, be sure to hear Mike Bloomfield's guitar work on The Electric Flag's version on, A long Time Comin'.
