Demo of the Granger M50 Plexi amplifier, with various Van Halen riffs. www.GrangerAmp.com for more specs, pricing, etc. The video is about the TONE of the amp, not my playing ability (this was one take, and rushed at that), and not about the accuracy of the VH riffs. I'm lucky to remember them, much less perform them fluidly. No comments about tempo, I tried to squeeze as many riffs into 5 minutes as I could. It's also NOT TO DEBATE WHAT EDDIE PLAYED THROUGH, WHETHER HE USED A DISTORTION PEDAL, WHETHER HE HAD ANY MODS, OR ANY OF THAT CRAP. THOSE TYPE COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED.

This amp is hand-wired and based on the early 70's era Marshall JMP50 circuitry, but with Plexiglas face plates, and a PPIV (Lar-Mar) master volume, and specific component value changes made to my personal preferences. It utilizes Solen and Sozo signal caps, JJ, Sprague, and F&T filter caps, JJ E34L and ECC83S tubes. PT is Weber, OT and choke are Heyboer, made to Mojotone specs. I've since started using transformers built to my spec by Magnetic Components, Inc. located in Chicago IL. These are the best transformers I've tried in this amp, and I've tried just about all of them, including Heyboer, Weber, Mercury Mags, and Hammond.

The recording is a 2000 Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus plugged straight into the amp. The cabinet is a standard 4x12 made of 3/4" baltic birch loaded with 8 ohm Mojotone BV-30Hs, wired in series/parallel for 8 ohms. The mic is a Shure SM57, into a dbx386 mic pre, and recorded on a Roland VS-1680. Reverb and tape echo effects added at mixdown.

And many thanks to Mr. EVH for years of inspiration.

Peace, love, and rock n roll!

  • Hi Curt, wich & how reverb and tape echo did you use on this record? (i'm trying to affect less possible my M50 tone)...

    did you use Variwatt attenuation?

Do you think my M50 could sound better if i use 220-110 wall voltage adaptor? (i'm in Italy)

    Thanks!

    Adriano

  • @drino5150 No attenuator. Effects were added from Roland 1680 during conversion. if you can get the voltage to 110 it will sound a little browner, since my wall voltage is around 122-124 most of the time. "Better" is of course, subjective.

  • This is so epic... its really unreal. I think I'm sold. Looking to buy one now. Unfortunately you've got this thing cranked to ungodly levels. heh.

  • @goingwithzed No, not ungodly level. MV was on 5. My usual gigging volume. Thanks for the compliment.

  • That is TONE!

  • Nailed it

  • Sounds awesome:) Are you going to post any Cream/Hendrix-style clips anytime soon? That's more of what I go for personally. Gotta sell some stuff first but I'm interested in buying one.

  • I own a few hot rod amps, and love Diezel amps, but this M50 is amazing, it has a beautiful TONE, the M100 is as impressive, a base price of around $1,599 for something that actually sound as good or better than a plexi and it's brand new, it is a steal.

If i have to decide between Granger , a Marshall or a EVH, I would go for Granger,

    without a moment of hesitation.

  • Sounds more Eddie than Eddie. Nice work!

  • NICE.

  • @Dyna6363 It's not the #1 M50, I own that. ;-) It's actually a custom M50 I built that became the prototype M502 Solo Plexi. So congrats on having the #1 of that model.
