In this video, I show you how to coat a screen printing screen with photo emulsion using a scoop coater. You can do it with a squeegee, but I highly recommend investing the money in a good scoop coater. It's much easier, and you will get much more even coating on the screen, making the whole process go better. I will usually coat the screens in the evening under indoor lighting. Sunlight has more UV in it, and can expose the photo emulsion more in a shorter amount of time.
Once coated, store the screens in a dark place to allow them to dry. If kept in the dark, you can store them for quite a while until you are ready to use them.

  • The exposure time varies by the type of light you use, the wattage of the light, and the distance of the light from the screen. If the light is half as bright, you will need to roughly double the exposure time. If the light is twice is bright, the exposure time is halved. If you moved the light closer to the screen, the time is descreased, etc. Personally I use a 250w halogen light, about 20 inches from the screen, and expose for about 40-50 minutes.
