This is a song recorded with the fantastic Rode NT1a Condenser Microphone. Although I have it mounted for the video, you can actually use this condenser as a hand held performance mic as well on stage. It has built in shock absorption system and a specially coated and grounded casing that reduces the handling noise. This is a really quiet (Low Noise) Microphone.

I record usually with the mic recording ambient guitar and vocals but mix the guitar in on a line through the Fishman preamp on the guitar. I record clean then mix in a little reverb, compression, minor equalization and that is it.

I love the Rode NT1a, it's like it needs no fuss, perfect if you are trying to do everything yourself as so many of us do these days. This condenser mic is very low maintenance and very durable but it does require phantom power and some sort of interface for use with computer recording. I used a Tascam US-122 and Sony Acid Pro Audio Editing Software.

The classic RODE NT1a offers the lowest self-noise on the market (5dBA). But still offers the warmth, extended dynamic range and clarity of much more expensive large-diaphragm condenser studio microphones.

  • I can stop listening to this!! Do you have an album??

  • @ID10Tofficial No, I don't but thanks.

  • I love that mic! Can you tell me what I need to set that thing up? I know I'll need the following..

    1) Mic + cable

    2) Guitar + cable

    3) Tascam 122

    4) Camcorder

    5) Computer

Mic cable and guitar cable goes into Tascam, and Tascam USB cable goes into the computer. Camcorder firewire/usb cable goes to the computer. Is this how you did it?

Am I missing anything else? Thanks!

  • Sounds like you've got the bulk of the items. You may need a stand and pop filter for the microphones, and I also used Sony Acid Pro for tweeking the sound with reverb and rendering the track but the Tascam also comes with Cubase LE which will do the same things.

    Have fun,

    Matt

  • Hey Matt, what micophone pre-amp are you using? I'm going to buy RODE NT-1 soon, but still I dint decided what preamp to buy.. I will produce Hip-Hop music, so, just vocal recording... I need to get warm, clean [without noise] sound quality... And what POP filter are you using? Thanks...

  • I'm plugging into a Tascam US-122 USB Audio / Midi Interface. It has Phantom Power X 2 with Guitar / Line, Direct Monitoring, 1/4" Stereo In / out. The controls are big knobs on top and the case is metal and rubber. Works great with sony Acid / Vegas but not used it with the included software.

    Cheers,

    Matt

  • Wow. I actually just wanted to view this video 'cause of the NT1-A, but your performance totally caught me ;) Great work!

  • Great recording again, but personally I would like to hear the sound of the guitar with no piezo pickup being recorded just the guitar. Your voice sounds great but the guitar sounds thin. Maybe it is just the sound of the guitar itself? Have you tried recording it without the guitar/line and just by the mic xlr?

  • @HomeStudioGear It is awesome man!!!
