Three explosions rocked crowded districts of Mumbai during rush hour on Wednesday, killing at least ten people - the biggest attack on the city since 2008 assaults blamed on Pakistan-based militants. The toll is expected to be higher.
Incidentally, the strike coincides with the birthday of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman in 26/11, who turned 24 on Wednesday. Kasab has been sentenced to death by a trial court.

At least 100 people were wounded in the near-simultaneous blasts, the home secretary said. One blast occurred at the Opera House, a tourist destination in South Mumbai, where Pakistani-based militants carried out the bloody rampage in 2008, killing 166 people.

Another blast, also in South Mumbai, was at the Zaveri Bazaar, the coastal city's diamond hub. The third blast was at Dadar, which is in the centre of the city.

Police said the blasts were caused by improvised explosive devices.

Television channels showed debris of twisted metal, motorbikes and cars severely damaged at one suspected blast site. "We were inside our office when we heard a huge noise. Outside there was a lot of commotion, we can see fire trucks are here and they have taken away two or three bodies," Jasraj Jain, a witness, told a private channel.

A reporter near the Opera House said police had cordened off the blast site and sent in sniffer dogs to examine the area. Ambulances and fire fighters stood by.

Nation-wide alert
Security vigil across the country, particularly in metro cities, was stepped up after the three explosions.

According to home ministry officials, all state governments have been asked to heighten security measures.

"All the state governments have been asked to increase police patrolling and keep forces on high alert," a home ministry official said.

A red alert was issued in Kolkata and its vicinity tonight following the serial blasts. Police sources said a close watch was being kept on railway and metro stations, airport, port, hotels and shopping malls.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan shortly after the serial blasts shook Mumbai.
