The first update of 2008. My dad and I stopped by Bridge #5 to catch a loaded coal train coming through. This was heading east on the Lambert's Point Branch towards the coal docks. I found this train coming home from my photography class at TCC in Portsmouth. It consists of a GEVO and a Catfish for power. The Nathan K5HLL horn sounds great!

Recorded 2.11.2008

Filmed with Canon PowerShot A710 IS still camera and transferred to YouTube via USB 2.0.

*I apologize for the shakiness in this video. I filmed it handheld with my Canon PowerShot A710 IS digital camera from my dad's van, which has a very bouncy ride.*

  • NICE!

  • Thanks, this is a pretty cool place to watch trains. I shot this with my still camera, thus the reason for the lower quality. This line is not very active a lot of the time, but if you go to the Norfolk Tides game, they start cranking them out. Indeed, I have seen eight trains in four hours during the games.

  • I should clarify also there was a diamond at South Norfolk where the VGN crossed the N&W. The interlocking building is still there but the tracks were taken up some time just after the N&W/VGN merger. This is how the VGN trains got across to Tidewater and points east in ref. to the comment I posted earlier. This would be the building you see when looking west geographically)across the main when standing by the west leg of the wye at Portlock. Ref:(NL25 Backing Up video)

  • Hey DRG1939, if Bridge #5 is out-of-service at any given time, would NS be able to use #5a temporarily since there's no other way to get from Lambert's Point to Portlock Yard? Just curious.

  • A brief history lesson..The Virginian did not use this bridge. The eastbound passenger trains on the VGN for Norfolk came in on the VGN main and made a diverging route at Tidewater Jct. (now defunct). This now giving them trackage rights over the original NS. The trains pulled into Norfolk's Union Station and then backed all the way to the VGN main at Tidewater when clear of passengers. Then proceeded east to the VGN Sewells Point yard for service. Most of this track is gone or out of service.

  • All info is appreciated! Thanks so much! I've been a railfan for almost six years, but I still have a lot to learn. ;)
