The nominees have just been announced for the 2009 BILLABONG XXL GLOBAL BIG WAVE AWARDS. Regarded as the Oscars of surfing, the BILLABONG XXL AWARDS recognize the athletes who ride the biggest and best waves over the last year everywhere in the world, based on the photographic evidence. The ninth-annual event hands out over $130,000 in cash prizes in an array of categories including the Ride of the Year, the XXL Biggest Wave, Monster Paddle and Monster Tube.   • Ummm, sharks? Depends, but sharks are your last worries. Unless there are Great Whites or Tiger sharks chillen right under you, those waves are capable of doing way more dmg. Getting caught in those would kill 99% of people - those surfers have been doing it their entire lives and are conditioned to take a beating that most Olympians cant handle, and sometimes it kills them. I think Ill stick to my fun 7-9 ft swells :) chance of dieing in that is pretty low here is CA and still epic fun.

  • @TastePixels Jet Skis at every big wave spot nowadays for getting out and rescue, but Im sure these guys could paddle out, they do at some big wave spots anyways. But some of these dudes are paddlin in to these waves !! NUTS!!

  • lol normal pros are trained to stay underwater and hold themselves to coral till the set is over (2-4 min)
