Scientology - Religion or Cult

We call Scientology a Cult. What do we mean by that?

We do not consider Scientology to be a Religion? Why not?

Characteristics of a Religion:

1. Higher spiritual being (god) FAIL
2. Holds religious services FAIL
3. Shares freely what it's beliefs really are with potential members FAIL
4. Spiritual Enlightenment doesn't cost any money FAIL
5. People are free to join and quit without consequences FAIL (It's a Hotel California deal)

5 Characteristics of a Cult (CultInformation.org)
1. Uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctinate, and retain it's members CHECK
2. Forms an elitist totalitarian society CHECK
3. Founder or leader is self appointed, charismatic, dogmatic, messianic, and not accountable CHECK
4. Believes the end justifies the means in order to solicit funds and recruit people. CHECK
5. Wealth does not benefit it's members or society. CHECK
