The theatre was brand new. So new, in fact, that the makeshift dressing room was a hodgepodge of lighted mirrors with performers sitting on the floor. But the entertainment itself was something very old. In spring 2012, the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI presented the world premiere of a lost 400-year old play by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher, The History of Cardenio. This half-hour documentary highlights the 20-year "sleuthing" by world-renowned Shakespeare scholar and Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University, Dr. Gary Taylor, to recreate the play, filtering old texts through modern high-tech databases to reconstruct the original. Viewers travel with Taylor to Shakespeare's New Globe Theatre in London and retrace his academic roots at Oxford University. We then return to Indianapolis where "the play's the thing" as Hoosier Bard productions, directed by IUPUI Professor of English Drama, Dr. Terri Bourus, reanimates Cardenio, with a mix of student and professional actors and a haunting original musical score, in the urban university's new theatre.
